Leaving Bed Alert Reminder Sheet
This document is for use by staff who have been trained to use Oxevision. You must be trained to use the system. Your Oxehealth Champion can arrange this for you or ask your manager.
What's New?
The Edge of Bed product has been redesigned to more precisely target its original purpose of only alerting to someone in the process of exiting the bed, having first been fully in bed.
Please note: The system must register a person as “In Bed '' before Oxevision is able to trigger a “Leaving Bed'' alert.
How does the Leaving Bed Alert work?
Examples of when a “Leaving Bed” alert IS designed to trigger:
Scenario 1. An individual was lying in bed for more than 5 seconds and then got out of bed and stood in the middle of the room.
- The system initially registered the individual as “In Bed”.
- The system triggered a “Leaving Bed” alert as the patient made rising movements that indicated that they were preparing to get out of bed.
- The system then triggered an “Out of Bed” alert within 10 seconds of the individual leaving the bed.
Scenario 2. An individual was lying in bed for more than 5 seconds and then moved to sit on the edge of the bed.
- The system initially registered the individual as “In Bed”.
- The system triggered a “Leaving Bed” alert as the patient made rising movements that indicated that they were preparing to get out of bed.
- Once the alert had been reset, a “Leaving Bed” warning state persisted whilst the individual remained sitting at the edge of the bed.
Examples of when a “Leaving Bed” alert IS NOT designed to trigger:
Scenario 1. An individual was standing in the room, they then sat on the edge of the bed, then stood up and walked to the middle of the room.
- The system continued to display as “In Room”.
Note: Oxevision must first register that the individual is “In Bed'' before it can trigger a Leaving bed alert. It does this by detecting movement in the bed for at least 5 seconds.
Scenario 2. An individual was lying in bed and rolled so that they were laid near the edge of the bed and remained there.
- The system continued to register the individual as “In Bed” throughout and did not raise a “Leaving Bed” or “Out of Bed” alert.
Note: The system has been trained to detect patterns of movement that are indicative of a patient making rising movements that indicate that they are preparing to get out of bed unattended.
Scenario 3. An individual was lying in bed and reached out of the bed for a glass of water.
Occasionally alerts may be issued if the patient rises significantly and appears to be preparing to leave the bed.
1 Leaving Bed alerts may indicate a person who is at risk of falling requires assistance. Please remember that Oxevision only provides location and activity based alerts and, as a result, may trigger unexpected Leaving Bed alerts in response to other activity in these areas, or miss an alert when a person is getting out of their bed or is at the edge of their bed under some circumstances. You should never rely solely on the system to ensure patient safety and always carry out your usual in-person safety checks.
