At Door Reminder Sheet
This document is for use by staff who have been trained to use Oxevision. You must be trained to use the system. Your Oxehealth Champion can arrange this for you or ask your manager.
What are they?
At Door alerts are designed to notify staff when activity is detected in the main doorway of a person’s room for a prolonged period of time. This can indicate to staff that a person may have been in the doorway for a prolonged period of time, so they can make an additional check on them.
Prior to an At Door alert being triggered, Oxevision will display an At Door warning state (see Reminder Sheet on “Room States”). This warning state displays after 30 seconds of a person loitering in the main doorway and starts a timer for how long they remain there. This warning turns into an alert after a set number of minutes or seconds, usually 2 ½ minutes (i.e. 3 minutes total dwell time), but can be tailored for individual wards.*
*At Door warnings and alerts can indicate a person may be at their main door. Please remember that Oxevision only provides location and activity based warnings and alerts and, as a result, may trigger an unexpected At Door warning or alert in response to other activity in the doorway, or miss a warning or alert when a person is in the doorway under some circumstances. You should never rely solely on the system to ensure patient safety and always carry out your usual in-person safety checks. For more information, please refer to the ‘Are there any limitations?’ section below.
How do they help?
At Door alerts are intended to help staff in caring for their patients by providing information on their whereabouts which can be useful in helping to determine who may need help or assistance.
Self-harm via ligature can be associated with loitering in proximity to a doorway so an At Door alert means that staff can be notified when a patient spends an unusually long time in that area.
Please note, this functionality is for the main doorway only. Bathroom doors (if applicable) do not have this feature enabled.
How do they work?
Oxevision “sees” movement in the room, much like a human eye does. It knows where critical areas in the room are, including the main doorway, which are identified during the installation process. It uses movement into these areas to determine when someone is in proximity to the main doorway.
Staff will see an At Door warning state after 30 seconds of the patient entering this area. Oxevision will then trigger an At Door alert after a set number of minutes or seconds, usually 2 ½ minutes, if the patient remains there .
The At Door alert will persist until a member of staff resets it. If the person remains in proximity to the doorway after a member of staff has reset the alert, an At Door warning state will persist for as long as they remain there. Please note that in this scenario, Oxevision will not trigger a new alert until it sees them leave and come back again, therefore restarting the timer.
Let’s look at an example…
A patient is in their room and moves to stand in close proximity to the main door for a period of 4 minutes. Their bedroom is configured to trigger an At Door alert after 3 minutes of total dwell time.
If the At Door alert is reset while the patient is still in the main doorway, Oxevision would continue to show an At Door warning state.
Are there any limitations?
We make every effort to ensure the optimal performance of Oxevision. However, it is important to know that as we work on making continuous improvements to the system, there are a few situations to be mindful of. If you’re ever in doubt, you can always reach out to Oxehealth who are available 24/7.
Incorrectly detecting spurious movement
Occasionally, Oxevision may detect movement that hasn’t come from a person and incorrectly believe the main bedroom has become occupied, i.e. that the person has moved away from the main doorway. This will only reset the timer if the movement persists for more than 10 seconds but may result in the timer restarting, causing a delayed At Door alert. One example of this is movement from a bathroom door or curtain left swinging shortly after a person has moved towards the main doorway.
Over-alerting from 1:1 observations
Unexpected At Door alerts can arise in bedrooms where 1:1 observations may be taking place from the main doorway. In this scenario, we would recommend that whilst the staff member is observing, that they position themselves further away from the door, for example, in the corridor outside the room.
Missed At Door alerts
Very occasionally, the ability for Oxevision to correctly detect a person in the main doorway may be compromised if the in-room equipment is disturbed. For example, if it has been obscured in some way or sustained an attack which may have caused broken illuminators or the optical sensor (infrared camera) to slip. If you suspect that this may have happened, please let Oxehealth know as soon as possible. We do routine checks to ensure that these effects don’t go unnoticed for long periods of time but it’s important to know as quickly as possible so that we can check for any issues.
Oxevision is designed to overcome these challenges and configuration changes are possible to minimise the risk of repeat issues. Please contact Oxehealth via the Feedback Form if you spot an unexpected or missed At Door alert.
Things to remember!
- Oxevision is designed to provide information to staff about whether someone has remained in their main doorway for a prolonged period, however, you should never rely solely on the system for this purpose and staff should remain vigilant
- Check your local protocol for responding to these types of alerts
- Oxevision will not trigger successive At Door alerts for someone remaining in the doorway. Instead, you will get a single alert after a set number of minutes or seconds which then changes to a warning state once the alert is reset
- Oxehealth is available 24/7 if you need support and would like to query the performance of Oxevision.
