Guidance for Staff when discussing Oxevision with Patient and Carers:

Patients and carers must be informed of the use of Oxevision and must be made aware of what Oxevision can and cannot do, and how it is used as part of the care that patients receive whilst in inpatient services. This is not a “one-size-fits-all” model and must take into account individual patient preferences and choices.

  • Please ensure you have read and understood your organisation's Standard Operating Procedure for Oxevision so you are able to discuss and answer any questions on how the system will be used.
  • Please ensure you have completed the Oxevision knowledge training so you are able to discuss and answer any question on how Oxevision works and what the system does and does not do.
  • Please ensure you have a copy of the Oxevision Poster and Patient Information Leaflet available when speaking to a patient or carer to support your conversation when explaining Oxevision.

Oxevision Summary

Oxevision uses an infrared camera to measure a patient’s pulse and breathing rate, sleep, location and activity in a room, providing information to staff via dedicated tablets and a fixed monitor to support clinicians to observe, intervene and plan patient care.

This information includes:

  • Vital signs observations (pulse rate and breathing rate) of patients who are resting or sleeping in their bedrooms without opening the door, entering the room, using torches or switching on lights. This reduces disturbance, especially at night.
  • Activity based alerts and warnings informing staff of activity which may mean a patient needs help or assistance in their bedroom. The combination of warnings and alerts are configured per ward as they are tailored to the specific needs of the patients.
  • Reports that show additional insight into a patient’s activity, sleep and vitals signs which can help inform care planning. These reports can be shared and discussed with patients.

Oxevision does not provide alerts for vital signs, for example alert for high/low pulse and/or breathing rate or cessation of vital signs.

Oxehealth has built various controls into the technology to protect patient privacy and dignity when Oxevision is used. Including:

  • Oxevision does not monitor the ensuite bathroom in patient bedrooms, it just knows when a person enters that area and when they return to the main bedroom area
  • Ward staff can only see live video feed in two instances:some text
    • When taking pulse or breathing rate measurements using Oxevision Vital Signs (clear video for up to 15 seconds)
    • When responding to a notification from Oxevision (blurred video for up to 15 seconds).
  • The device has no microphone which means no sound is recorded.

Oxevision is an additional tool to support patient care. It cannot and should not replace therapeutic engagement with patients or the visible presence of staff in the ward environment.
